Health and Social Care GCE AS/A level

This page contains information related to our GCE AS/A level Health and Social Care specification available in England and Wales.

Wales Centres Only

We are pleased to announce that, in Wales, the end date for our current single and double award GCSE and GCE AS/A level in Health and Social Care will be extended until 2020, with possible re-sit opportunities in 2021. This will mean that centres are able to continue entering candidates in September 2018 for two-year courses or in September 2017 for three-year courses.

All centres in Wales will need to start the new reformed suite of Health and Social Care qualifications, Levels 1-5, from September 2020. You can find out more about this on the new Health and Care learning Wales website and on the Qualifications Wales website.

England Centres Only
The final award for this qualification will be summer 2018. For more information on the reformed GCE AS/A level Health and Social Care development work, please click here.

Level 3 Applied Health and Social Care (England Only)

We are pleased to confirm that, following consultation, we have begun development of new Level 3 Applied Health and Social Care qualifications for centres in England for a 2017 start.

The new WJEC Level 3 Applied Health and Social Care qualifications will be designed to provide learners with underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills of the health and social care sectors, providing a broad basis for further or higher education or for moving into employment within the sectors. These qualifications will be built on a firm foundation of knowledge and understanding of practitioner roles and values, set within contemporary sector-specific contexts.

WJEC Level 3 Applied qualifications have been designed as two-year courses, although this is not a mandatory requirement. They:

  • are graded A*-E
  • are designed to complement GCE AS/A Levels and other Level 3 qualifications
  • are available as a Certificate (180 GLH) or Diploma (360 GLH)

The Level 3 Health and Social Care statement of purpose can be viewed here; this, however, is subject to change as it is still in the early stages of development.
