Resources for Boys Don’t Cry and Leave Taking

In 2023 we introduced two new texts into our post 1914 Prose and Drama section to introduce a wider range of cultural diversity and representation into our specification:

Boys Don't Cry by Malorie Blackman Leave Taking by Winsome Pinnock

Boys Don't Cry, by Malorie Blackman, is a fresh and engaging novel that has positive representations of black and LGBTQ+ characters. Malorie Blackman, former Children's Laureate, is acknowledged as one of today's most imaginative and convincing writers for young readers.

Leave Taking, by Winsome Pinnock, explores the dislocated identity of black British immigrants. It has been described by The Guardian as an 'insightful and pioneering portrayal of the lives of black Britons'.

Explore our new Poetry Anthology for 2025

Our team of subject experts has curated a new collection of 15 poems that will expose learners to voices from a broader spectrum of cultural perspectives than ever before.

Schools and colleges can begin studying the new anthology with their classes from September 2025, with first assessment in summer 2027.

The new collection includes a balanced representation of male and female poets, and features works by Jackie Kay, Zulfikar Ghose, Eve L Ewing and Claude McKay.

Each poem will be supported by a Knowledge Organiser, a set of lessons in a Blended Learning resource and a front of class resource. These will be available by summer 2025.
