Shaping the future: Discover Wales’ first Semiconductors qualification with WJEC and CSconnected

WJEC’s new Introduction to Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (Semiconductors) qualification is now available for teaching.

This innovative new qualification has been developed in partnership with industry experts including CSconnected, the world’s first compound semiconductor cluster, with the aim of upskilling the workforce in Wales.

Brandon Jones, Skills Manager at CSconnected, explains the importance of semiconductors, Wales’ pioneering role in the industry and how this new qualification can benefit learners:

"Semiconductors are at the heart of any modern technology. They are unique materials that control electrical currents, making them the backbone of virtually every electronic device we rely on today -from smartphones to computers, and even life-saving medical devices and clean energy systems.

Wales and Semiconductors

Wales is home to the world's first compound semiconductor cluster, which is represented by CSconnected. We are at the forefront of semiconductor technologies, creating a collaborative environment that positions Wales as a leader in the industry.

This gives us an edge in new advancements like 5G, electric vehicles, and healthcare technology. We're not just participants – we are driving the industry.

With the rapid growth of the compound semiconductor industry, there's a pressing need for a highly skilled workforce. The region currently supports around 2,600 jobs, a number expected to double within the next five years as the industry expands.

Where WJEC’s new qualification fits in

WJEC’s new Introduction to Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (Semiconductors) qualification is crucial for developing talent and keeping pace with global demand.

It's about empowering the next generation and demonstrating that this industry is foundational for future technologies. Investing in education now secures Wales’ role as a competitive hub for high-tech innovation and future-proofs their careers.

The qualification is ideal for school leavers, early career individuals, or anyone looking to upskill in a high-tech field. It’s typically completed over a few months and is available at Level 2, offering a balance of accessibility and challenge.

It equips learners with foundational knowledge and hands-on skills needed in the advanced manufacturing environment, specifically the semiconductor industry.

Learners will gain insights into cutting-edge practical applications within the semiconductor industry, exploring robotics, automation and material science. They will also develop their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, while gaining an appreciation for industry standards and valued skills.

The qualification opens doors to a wealth of opportunities across the industry, including apprenticeships, Higher National Diploma (HND), Higher National Certificate (HNC), and direct entry into full-time degree programs. There's also a more advanced WJEC qualification on the way, the Level 4 Higher Technical Qualification for Semiconductor Technicians. It provides expertise in manufacturing, quality control, and equipment maintenance within the semiconductor industry.

As the industry grows, so does the demand for these skilled roles, making this qualification a gateway to a dynamic career pathway.
