Offering pathways for future success – our qualifications in action
As the leading awarding body in Wales, we are committed to offering a comprehensive suite of qualifications that provide learners with pathways that suit their needs.
Our vocational suite continues to grow, providing learners routes into whatever path they choose to follow. Each qualification is future-focused and developed in partnership with education and industry experts, to offer learners learning experiences that meet their needs and interests.
One of our most popular qualifications is our suite of ‘Pathways to Employment’ qualifications. These have been designed to support learners to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to progress to employment or further education and training.
We spoke with Claire Williams (Manager) and Lauren Lawrence (Tutor) at Coleg Cambria on why these qualifications are ideal for their learners.
What attracted you to our Pathways to Employment qualifications?
We currently deliver the Level 1 Certificate in Self Development and Wellbeing as this offers a clear pathway for learners seeking employment in the childcare sector. The qualification has inspired and motivated our learners, encouraging them to develop the knowledge and understanding necessary for success in the industry.
Importantly, the qualification ensures that learners receive support tailored to their individual needs, aligning with their motivation to seek employment. Overall, this qualification is a vital part of our commitment to empowering learners and preparing them for a meaningful career in childcare.
How have you adopted the qualification within your college?
We have introduced the Level 1 qualification as part of a ‘step into programme’. This has proved particularly beneficial for learners who found the progression from Level 1 to 2 challenging. As a result, we have seen a significant number of learners passing their Level 2 qualifications, showcasing the benefit of this approach.
Looking to the future, we will combine the Level 1 qualification with other Childcare qualifications. We believe that introducing this as part of a framework, will ensure learners are well prepared and confident when undertaking courses at higher levels.
How have your learners responded to the qualification?
Learners have responded very positively to this qualification. We have observed a drastic change in their confidence levels, which has been truly remarkable. Many learners have demonstrated significant improvement in their interpersonal skills, allowing them to interact more effectively with peers and potential employers.
Additionally, there has been notable progress in their time management, punctuality and overall professional skills. This improvement has helped them feel more prepared for the expectations of the workplace.
Learners have expressed increased confidence in understanding what t to expect in employment, this has contributed to a strong sense of achievement and personal growth. Overall, this qualification has had a transformative impact on their outlook and readiness for future opportunities.
How has WJEC supported you in the delivery of the qualification?
Support from Amy Thomas, Subject Officer at WJEC has been fantastic, we have felt supported throughout. Her team provides excellent advice and if we need any support, we know who to contact.
