5 reasons to download WJEC Principal Examiner Reports

From the Autumn term, teachers in Wales get free access to Principal Examiner reports for their subjects.

But what exactly is a Principal Examiner Report, and why are they useful? Nia Jones, Professional Learning Development Manager for WJEC, explains.

Examiner Reports are written by our Principal Examiners and Moderators after they finish marking the summer assessment series and summarise how candidates performed.

They are a valuable tool that can help you and your learners on the way towards better outcomes in the future. Here are just some of the ways you could benefit from downloading your subject’s Principal Examiner report:

1. Gain a better understanding of what was being assessed, and how learners responded

Principal Examiner Reports take a close look at each individual section of the assessment, so you can see exactly what skills and knowledge were being evaluated. They also point out trends in candidate responses, and, where relevant, compare performance with previous assessment series.

2. Spot potential pitfalls for next year’s assessment candidates

Our Examiner Reports point out where learners struggled in recent assessments – for example, if there were questions that didn’t seem to be fully read, or areas of knowledge where candidates seemed to be underprepared.

You can then use this information to inform your teaching for next year’s candidates, bolstering their skills and knowledge in these areas.

3. Prepare for this year’s Professional Learning journey

If you’re looking to boost your skills and knowledge as a teacher this year, Principal Examiner Reports are a great first step.

They lead naturally into our Free Online Assessment Feedback events. These are a mix of live webinars and pre-recorded sessions which take an even closer look at how candidates responded, including examples of marked papers.

4. Discover new digital resources for your learners

Our Principal Examiner Reports include links to a wide range of useful information, including where to access our digital resources.

Reports for selected subjects will include an executive summary highlighting areas for improvement and which resources can help.

5. Get a new revision tool for learners

As well as being useful for teachers, we recommend sharing examiner reports, or portions of them, directly with your learners. They can be a useful tool for revision and exam prep, alongside our digital resources.
