New GCE AS/A level qualifications for Wales

WJEC has been in discussion with Welsh Government about developing new AS/A level qualifications for Wales, for teaching from 2015. The accredited specification and specimen assessment material are now available:

WJEC GCE AS/A level Art and Design - Approaches to Teaching (Wales Centres Only)

WJEC Eduqas AS/A level Art and Design accredited

Eduqas is the new brand from WJEC, offering Ofqual reformed qualifications to secondary schools and colleges in England.

WJEC is delighted to announce that the Eduqas AS and A level Art and Design specifications for first teaching in 2015 have been accredited by Ofqual for use by centres in England. The accredited specifications and sample assessment materials are now available. For information relating to all reformed qualifications offered by WJEC in England, please visit the Eduqas website.

Current specification for final teaching from September 2014

This specification offers a practical course with maximum opportunities for a stimulating experience of creativity and art, craft and design making activities.

Particular features are seven areas of study. Refer to page 8 of the specification for individual classification codes.

  • Art, Craft and Design
  • Fine Art
  • Critical and Contextual Studies
  • Textile Design
  • Graphic Communication
  • 3D Design
  • Photography Lens and Light based media)

For the Advanced Subsidiary each area of study will entail:

  • ART1 Candidate Portfolio 60%
  • ART2 Controlled Assignment 40%

For the Advanced Subsidiary each area of study will entail:

  • ART1 Candidate Portfolio 60%
  • ART2 Controlled Assignment 40%

For the Advanced each area of study will entail:

  • ART3 Personal Investigation 60%
  • ART4 Controlled Assignment 40% (including Stretch and Challenge)

ART1 Candidate Portfolio and ART3 Personal Investigation

A coherent body of work which must be selected and presented by the candidate for moderation

ART2/ART4 Controlled Assignment

This will incorporate both visual and written stimuli (refer to the specimen assessment materials or past papers). All work must be selected and presented by the candidate for moderation. Candidates entered for an area of study other than Art, Craft & Design must complete ART1 and ART2 from the same area of study e.g. a candidate entered for textiles Design must submit both units in textiles etc. If the units are from different areas of study then the candidate must be entered for Art, Craft & Design. In all areas of study, the ART1 Candidate Portfolio must show breadth of processes and educational experiences.

Remember, that if a candidate progresses to the Advanced course, they must continue with the same area of study that they entered for AS. It is advisable that, in the Controlled Assignments candidates should not select processes or techniques that they have not covered during their studies. All work is moderated by a centre professional visit.
